Panaji, Goa: Goa Chief Minister Dr. Pramod Sawant has stressed the importance of linguistic proficiency, saying that while Konkani remains an important language for Goans, people should also make an effort to speak Marathi correctly and fluently.
“We speak Konkani, but it is important to speak Marathi correctly and fluently,” Sawant said, highlighting the cultural and linguistic connections shared across the region.
Sawant has previously maintained that Goa’s regional languages should be promoted and preserved. The Goa government has supported initiatives for both Konkani and Marathi, including literary, educational and cultural programmes.
His latest remarks come amid continuing discussions in Goa over the place of Konkani and Marathi in the state’s cultural and linguistic landscape.
