Former Member of Parliament from North Mumbai, Gopal Shetty, has written a letter to Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) Commissioner Bhushan Gagrani, requesting that the newly developed theatre near Dwarkesh Park, Borivali (West), under the R-Central ward, be named after the late playwright Gangaram Gawankar.
In his letter, social worker and public representative Gopal Shetty expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the demise of Mumbai’s renowned playwright, director, and writer Gangaram Gawankar, who passed away on October 27, 2025. Gawankar, who resided in Dahisar (East) for many years, was not just a playwright but also a sensitive artist who represented the emotions of the common Marathi individual.
His writings beautifully reflected the essence of Konkani-Malvani culture, the realities of local life, and the touch of humanity. Through his plays, he effectively voiced the concerns and experiences of the common man.
Gawankar dedicated his life to Marathi theatre in Mumbai, especially in the suburban areas, and was instrumental in providing a platform to many emerging artists while also guiding local cultural organizations. His plays infused new energy into the cultural life of the Dahisar-Borivali region.
To honor his legacy and inspire future generations, Gopal Shetty has requested that the newly developed theatre near Dwarkesh Park, Borivali (West), be named “Late Playwright Gangaram Gawankar Theatre.”
