Sudha Chandran Recalls Losing Her Leg at 15; “Maine Decide Kiya Tha Main Wapas Aungi”

June 2026, Mumbai: The upcoming episode of Tum Ho Naa – Ghar Ki Superstar, hosted
by Rajeev Khandelwal, will witness an inspiring Journey and a deeply emotional
conversation with actress and classical dancer Sudha Chandran, as she revisits the life-
changing journey that turned her into a symbol of inspiration for generations.
In a conversation with Rajeev, when Sudha’s helper recalled reading about Sudha ji in his
school textbook and shared, “Jab main chotasa tha tab maine story padhi, school ki kitaab
mai 4th class mein, bada honga toh dono mai se ek ke pass jana hai aur main aagaya Sudha
ji ke pass.”
Later, Sudha revealed, “Actually, textbooks mein ek chapter hai, all states mein toh jab ye
bacche the, hala ki main bolti hoon kuch bacche aaj bhi padh rahe hai as a chapter toh I
would say yeh sabse badi uplabdhi maine hasil ki hai, reel life heroine toh main hoon hi par
real life mein hoon yeh mere liye garv ki baat hai.”
Highlighting the significance of her achievements, Rajeev added, “Bilkul real life heroine hai
kyunki vidhayak Ji ke upar bakayda, school ki textbook mein, NCERT Hindi ki kitaabo ke
andar ek chapter tha, inki achievement ke upar jeevan ke upar ek chapter tha jo bacche
shool mein padha karte the toh iss manch pe jab main kehta hoon superstars aarahe hai toh
vakai super stars aati hai. Chapter ki baat khuli hai sudha ji toh mujhe batana padega main
adhura chod sakta nahi hoon, ek baar main unn panno ko palatna jarur chahunga, kya likha
tha unn chapters mein”
In response to Rajeev’s question about the chapter, Sudha shared that her story had been
included in textbooks because she believed it was important for future generations. She
reflected on how, after losing her leg in an accident, many people questioned how she
would continue dancing and encouraged her to focus on academics instead, believing that
her future lay in education rather than in dance.
Recalling the life threatening accident she faced at the age of 15, she said, “Main teenager
ke threshold pe thi, aur har koi jaanta hai teenage ek aisi umar hai jaha par aapke itne sare
khwaab hote hai. Main compare karti hoon meri zindgi to a flight jo almost take off karne ke
liye taiyaar tha. Like jab aap take off ko abort kar dete ho, wings ko kaat dete ho, aap dham
karke dharti par girte ho, aur uss wakat aapke pass koi option nahi hota.” She further
recalled the moment doctors informed her in the operation theater that her leg had to be
amputated because gangrene had spread. Further, she added, “Actually, main minor thi toh
mere parents ne woh decision liya, ki aap operation kar dijiye, hume humari beti chahiye.”

Speaking about the determination that kept her moving forward after her surgery, Sudha
said, “Jo decisions aap zindagi mai lete hai na woh long thought process nahi hota hai, woh
instantly aap ek decision lete ho kyunki kya hota hai agar aap apne aap ko bohut jyada time
dete ho na toh log aapko influence karne lagte hai, kahi na kahi aap unki baato mein aajate
ho, Maine decide kiya tha main wapas aungi, kaise aungi yeh main nahi jaanti, woh maine
uparwale pe chod diya.”
Further, she added “Teen mahine mein Jaipur Foot invent hua, and DR P.K.Sethi, DR D.R
Metha unhone yeh invent kiya, and my doctor walked in and said here is the answer to your
question. Bas ab mujhe koi nahi rok sakta.”
Later, admiring her strength, Rajeev asked Sudha, “15 saal ki umar mein jab aapki surgery
hui tab aapney taay kar liyatha ki aap dance karengi?” to which Sudha said, ” Nahi main
wapas aungi, kaise karungi yeh mujhe nahi pata”
Later, she shared that after three years of relentless hard work, she returned to the stage in

  1. Recalling one of the most emotional moments of her life, Sudha revealed that after
her performance, her father came up to her and touched her feet. Surprised by the gesture,
she asked him what he was doing. Her father replied that he was not touching his
daughter’s feet, but was bowing to the goddess Saraswati, whom he saw residing within
    her.
Moved by her incredible story, Rajeev reflected, “Hum logon ko bukhaar hota hai toh lagta
hai hum kuch nahi kar sakte. Zindagi mein jab setbacks aate hai toh lagta hai yeh end hai.
Sochiye, 15 saal ki umar mein ek pair chala jata hai unka jo ek dancer thi, jinke sapne the.”
Summing up, Sudha said, “You don’t need limbs to dance; you need a soul to dance.”
Referring about the doctor who treated her during that time she said “And the surprising
part was Dr P.K Sethi baithe the woh aake mujhse puch rahe the beta, tumne dance kaise
kar liya, maine kaha doctor aapne hi toh mujhse kaha tha main kar sakti hu” revealing his
honest confession, she said, “You know his honest confession, jab pehli bar main tumse mila
main tumhe na nahi keh paya isliye galti se maine haa keh diya, and woh galti became a plus
point for me and i started dancing”
To this, Rajeev added with admiration, “Sudha ji, woh soul abhi bhi zinda hai, possible hai ek
chotasa dance ” Sudha replied ” Aree kuch jyada hi zinda hai.” What came next is a fabulous
performance by Sudha Chandran. Her remarkable journey stands as a powerful reminder
that determination can overcome even the toughest challenges.
