MUMBAI: Most actors take a straight path to the film industry, but Navchetan Rai’s journey started with a cape, a pair of underwear, and a lot of curiosity.
When he was in nursery school, Navchetan had his very first stage performance. He played a character called the “VIP Man” in a fancy dress competition. His parents gave him one simple rule: “Don’t look back.” He followed their advice, said his line proudly, and won first place.
The next year, he performed as a children’s tailor. This time, he decided to break the rule just to see what would happen. He looked back, and he finished in second place. For Navchetan, that moment wasn’t a failure. It taught him something important about himself: he was more interested in exploring and trying new things than just trying to win.
Growing up, Navchetan was good at many things. He was a state-level swimmer, a school leader, and heavily involved in theater and cultural festivals. But what he loved most was watching people and learning about human behavior.

This curiosity took his life in many different directions. He studied computer applications at university and worked as a software tester, even moving to Kuala Lumpur for his career. He also taught spoken English to students from Korea, worked as a DJ, and produced music for international tours.
When he returned to India, he started over again. He tried modeling, did voiceover work, and taught calisthenics fitness classes. During his fitness sessions, he found himself talking to people about their feelings, heartbreaks, and confidence.
Eventually, all of these different experiences brought him back to his true passion: acting. For Navchetan, acting is the perfect place to use everything he has observed about human life.
Today, his career is shining bright. He has starred in major advertisements, including a Canva commercial that has been viewed over 290 million times. He has also appeared in projects on Netflix, the series The Trial Season 2, and has an upcoming lead role in the micro-series Pyaar Main Kabhi Kabhee.
Looking back at his life, Navchetan does not see his different jobs as a lack of focus. Instead, he sees them as steps on a path guided by curiosity. He is still the same person he was on that nursery stage—always ready to make the unusual choice just to see where it leads.
