Sickle Cell Anemia Complication During Pregnancy Successfully Managed

Pranav Birje | Senior Correspondent

Pregnancy presents significant challenges for women with sickle cell anemia. One woman, who was placed on ventilator support and spent almost a month in the ICU following her previous pregnancy, faced a major challenge when she conceived again. Thankfully, the team led by well-known gynecologist and obstetrician Dr. Nisha Buchade at Vasavi Hospitals ensured that the second pregnancy proceeded without complications and ensured both mother and baby are now in good health.

“A woman diagnosed with sickle cell anemia, who experienced severe complications during her first pregnancy, which nearly led to a life-threatening situation. Following a Caesarean section, she required ICU care and ventilator support for a month. She was advised against the second pregnancy.” After five years, she conceived again (in between she also had an abortion as well). Despite the risks, she was determined to continue the second pregnancy.

Despite the critical health risks, the medical team explained the potential worst-case scenarios, including the likelihood of multiple complications and she decided to continue the pregnancy accepting the risks. Additionally, careful attention was given to ensure the growing fetus would not be adversely affected.

“With appropriate treatment, several complications, including preeclampsia, deep vein thrombosis (DVT), pulmonary embolism, severe anemia, organ damage, lung infections, and urinary tract infections in the mother, were successfully avoided. The fetus was also protected from potential issues such as fetal death, respiratory distress, prematurity, and severe jaundice. Thanks to vigilant care, these complications were prevented. The patient delivered a healthy 2.6 kg baby girl, and both mother and child were discharged on the third day without any complications”, she added.
